HIV exams for O-level

Zimbabwe will soon introduce HIV and AIDS related examinations for O-Level and Grade seven.
THE Government will introduce the subjects through the National Life Skills, Sexuality, HIV and Aids Education Strategic Plan 2012- 2015.
Speaking during a National Aids Council (NAC) two-day workshop for all education districts in the country, Director of School Psychological Services and Special Needs Education within the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Mrs Hannah Maisiri said the programme would be launched on 19 October.
"We will launch the HIV and Aids Education Strategic Plan 2012 – 2015 on 19 October. This will serve as a policy in monitoring the commitment of schools in adolescence sexual reproductive health education.
"Both the primary and secondary school curriculums are under review and we hope that after this process, HIV and Aids issues will be considered as examinable subjects to foster emphasis and commitment by school Heads,' said Mrs Maisiri.
She also urged non-Government organisation to desist from imposing themselves on schools and to follow procedure when conducting Aids awareness programmes.
"It is unfortunate that many NGOs want to conduct HIV and Aids related programmes in our schools without our consent. We urge them to apply to district education offices or to the provincial education offices before they go on with the programmes.
"I encourage parents and guardians to stop sending their children to unregistered schools as the Ministry cannot monitor how their activities especially with regards to adolescence sexual reproductive health education," she said.
