Police holding cells 'super-spreaders'

POLICE holding cells in Zimbabwe could be Covid-19 super-spreaders owing to the conditions at most of the country's police cells.
Standardpeople yesterday witnessed Covid-19 violators, most of whom did not have face masks, frogmarched by soldiers from Chinhoyi CBD into Chinhoyi central police station, which was already teeming with many other people.
The arrested people did not go through the Covid-19 security procedures, including temperature checks and hand-sanitising upon admission into the cells. They were crammed into a smallholding fence outside the cells.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Margaret Chitove said they would comment on the issue after looking into the matter. She promised to comment after a short, while but her phone was no longer being answered when we tried to call her.
Other police stations that were not complying with Covid-19 health regulations include Lions Den, Chemagamba and Charlie Base.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he had noted the concerns and would check with provincial commanders on how those arrested were being held, in respect to Covid-19 procedures.
