The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) has announced the release of the 2023 Grade 7 examination results, with students able to access their results on the Zimsec online portal starting today. School heads will be able to collect the results from their respective regional offices beginning Monday.
Zimsec chairperson, Eddie Mwenje, revealed that a total of 372,603 candidates sat for one to six subjects in the 2023 examinations, reflecting a 7.89% increase in candidature compared to the 343,169 candidates recorded in 2022.
Mwenje noted a significant improvement in the national pass rate.
"The 2023 Grade 7 examinations session has recorded a national pass rate of 45.57%, an increase of 5.48% from last year's pass rate of 40.09%," he stated.
The improvement in performance has been attributed to the return of a normal school calendar following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mwenje also credited interventions by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in enhancing teaching and learning outcomes.
The results also revealed a gender disparity in performance, with female candidates achieving a pass rate of 49.59% compared to 41.21% for male candidates.
For the 357 special needs learners who sat for the exams, results showed notable participation and performance. Of these, 194 candidates wrote six subjects, while 113 candidates with hearing impairments wrote five subjects. The average pass rate for all special needs learners was 42.99%.
The release of the results marks a crucial milestone for both students and schools as they prepare for the transition to secondary education. Parents and guardians are encouraged to use the online portal to access the results promptly, while schools are expected to distribute physical copies once collected from regional offices.
The improved pass rate is seen as a positive sign of recovery in Zimbabwe's education sector, with stakeholders expressing optimism about continued advancements in academic performance.
