IN an unprecedented event, two police officers believed to be stationed at Hillside Police Station in Bulawayo, were last week involved in a scuffle over beer, at a sports bar in Four Winds, while they were on duty and in uniform.
The police officers, who were visibly drunk and caught on camera, were imbibing at a newly opened sports bar in the neighbourhood last Sunday afternoon, raising the ire of the public, after they got involved in a scuffle.
The officer commanding police in Bulawayo, Senior Assistant Commissioner Stephen Mutamba, said the Zimbabwe Republic Police did not condone such behaviour from officers of the law, particularly those in uniform.
He said: "No police officer is allowed to drink while they are on duty and in uniform."
The police officers reportedly started drinking alcohol at a bottle store at Fourwinds shopping centre in the morning before the sports bar opened for business in the afternoon.
Witnesses said the pair, which they described as a nuisance for undermining the law of Zimbabwe, even threatened other imbibers at the sports bar, after one of them took a sip of a customer's beer without permission.
"They started drinking in the morning and they were drunk by noon. After they left the bottle store they went to the sports bar where they got involved in a scuffle before leaving.
"While they were at the bar they got involved in an argument with a customer, after one of them took a sip of the customer's beer without his permission.
"That is when one of them started lecturing the other about bar etiquette. It seemed the other one wasn't too keen on listening and that is when they started pulling and pushing each other," said a witness.
The man, whose beer was sipped, said he was disappointed and surprised at the way the police officers had undermined the law, yet they were its custodians.
"It's shocking how some of these cops get away with such crimes yet they are custodians of the law. These policemen should be brought to book for misbehaving.
"We are tired of having to deal with corrupt policemen all the time. Their bosses should see to it that they receive punishment," he said.
