A Harare cop was arrested on Saturday for conning his relative a total of US$13,252.00 on separate occasions using a debit card thereby contravening SECTION 113 OF THE CRIMINAL LAW (CODIFICATION AND REFORM) ACT CHAPTER 9:23.
Sources close to investigations allege constable Mhlanga helped his late uncle's wife Happiness Mavunga (43) in accessing her late husband's monthly pension through the use of her debit card in August 2016.
The deceased was a member of the Zimbabwe National Army and had passed on, on 25 May 2015.
Happiness Mavunga had processed the deceased's pension through the Government Pension Office and started receiving monthly payment of US$197,00.
During separate occasions last year the accused would assist the complainant in making withdrawals and accessing cash from retail shops through the cash back facility together.
Mavunga subsequently missed her card and asked Mhlanga who admitted to have it and was ordered to bring it back which he never did.
In May 2017 she went to the pensions offices making a follow up on her late husband's pension and was told that the pension was already deposited into her POSB account prompting her to obtain a bank statement and saw that a sum of $14138,00 had been deposited and withdrawn by the suspect.
The matter was reported at Harare Central Police station and being handled by Commercial Crime Unit," said the source.
According to the police disciplinary action is being taken against Mhlanga for contravening paragraph 35 of the Schedule to the Police Act Chapter 11:10.
