Four Chinese nationals who were arrested in Bikita for killing over 40 tortoises have been deported after paying US$300 fine each for working in Zimbabwe without permits.
Zhang Hong Yuan, Chen Caijan, Lin Guibin and Shi Jiahua were arrested for breaching the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and working without permits in Bikita.
They had killed the Bells Hinged Tortoise listed under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) Appendix II. The Department of Immigration yesterday confirmed the deportation of the four.
"Yes the Chinese nationals have already been fined and deported for violating immigration laws," Assistant Regional Immigration Officer Mr Francis Mabika said.
Chairman of the Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Mr Ed Lanca last week said the four were arrested following a joint raid by police, National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and The Save Valley Conservancy Anti-Poaching Unit.
