A 25-year-old Apostolic church member in Hurungwe last week committed suicide after the church leadership demoted her from a "prophetic office" after accusing her of adultery.

Motion Mupitau's lifeless body was found dangling from a tobacco barn truss following a heated meeting that resolved to remove her from her office.

Police confirmed the case saying it was being treated as suicide.

According to information gathered last week, the leadership of "True Chinovava Sect" summoned Mupitau to a meeting following allegations that she was involved in an adulterous affair.

It is understood the meeting resolved to bar her from holding office. Church elders ruled that she had sinned and violated canon law.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said investigations were still in progress.

"Preliminary investigations by our police units on the ground indicate Mupitau committed suicide," he said.

"Mupitau's body was dangling on a truss of the tobacco barn when our detail arrived on the scene."
