Midlands State University Vice Chancellor Professor Ngwabi Bhebhe and Zimplow managing director Mr Zondi Kumwenda are the 2011 Zimbabwe Institute of Managers winners of the manager of the year for the private and public service sectors, respectively.
The two were awarded at a glittering ceremony in Harare last week.
Several other businesspeople walked away with prizes at the ZIM Manager of the Year awards that recognise individuals who excelled and promoted best management practices throughout the previous year.
In second place for the private sector manager of the year was Hwange Colliery managing director Mr Fred Moyo, followed by Belleview Spar managing director Mr Rajesh Indukant Modi.
The small-to-medium enterprise manager of the year award went to The Musketeers Lodge managing director Mrs Moira Blanche Rainsford.
The customer service excellence award went to Packers International managing director Mr Tawanda Mutyebere, who was also a runner-up for the SMEs award.
The national contribution award went to Zimbabwe Revenue Authority commissioner-general Mr Gershem Pasi.
There were no winners for the Young Manager of the Year award.
Vice President Joice Mujuru is patron of ZIM.
In a speech read on her behalf by the Minister of State in her office, Mr Sylvester Nguni, VP Mujuru said the country's economic growth was largely dependent on effective management at the corporate level.
"It goes without saying that the macro-economic targets that we set at national level can only be achieved through aggregating micro-targets accomplished at company level.
"Hence the need for institutions of higher education and training such as the Zimbabwe Institute of Managers to build and reinforce concepts and systems that focus on achievement of results," she said.
Meanwhile, ZIM last week introduced a new award â€" the Lifetime Achievement Management Excellence award â€" that has been introduced to mark the institute's 55th anniversary.
According to ZIM president Mr John Chikura, the Lifetime Management Excellence Achievement Award "seeks to create role models in management and to promote lifelong commitment to management and leadership excellence".
The inaugural the Lifetime Achievement Management Excellence award was bestowed on outgoing Delta Corporation chief executive officer Mr Joe Mutizwa.
He is stepping down as Delta CEO on May 31 after serving almost 30 years with the company.
Mr Mutizwa is touted for having led the transformation of the Delta Group into an integrated business and for the expansion of the brand's footprint.
The "Manager of the Year Award" was established in 1978 with just one manager receiving an award but has since grown and now recognises best management practices across all sectors and also incorporating small-to-medium enterprises, national contributors as well as young managers.
