Zimbabwe fuel prices push truckers to South Africa

Soaring fuel prices in Zimbabwe have driven long-distance truck drivers to refuel in South Africa, a trend that is now straining supply at filling stations in the border town of Musina.

Transport operators say it has become more cost-effective to fill tanks and carry extra fuel from South Africa to avoid higher local prices.

"I'm heading to Zambia, but I can't afford to fill up in Zimbabwe. I fuel up in South Africa and carry extra for the trip," said one truck driver who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The increased demand has reportedly left some Musina service stations struggling to cope, with attendants prioritising South African-registered vehicles.

"We are only reserving fuel for South African registered vehicles. Please check again next week," said one station attendant.

While fuel in South Africa remains relatively cheaper compared to Zimbabwe, prices have also seen slight increases in recent weeks amid global supply pressures, including geopolitical tensions such as the Iran–Israel conflict.

The shortage has also affected informal fuel traders in the border area, who say supplies have become inconsistent.

Meanwhile, in Zimbabwe, rising pump prices have pushed more consumers toward informal fuel vendors, as official prices continue to outpace household affordability.

The growing cross-border fuel demand is placing additional pressure on supply chains in border towns, raising concerns about long-term sustainability and regional fuel distribution stability.
