Zimbabwe death toll in Ukraine-Russia war rises to 18

The Zimbabwean government has confirmed that the number of its nationals killed in a foreign conflict has risen to 18, up from 15 reported last week, amid ongoing investigations into recruitment networks linked to overseas military activity.

Authorities say the victims were allegedly lured through deceptive recruitment schemes that exploit economic hardship, with some reportedly channelled into operations associated with Russia's Alabuga Special Economic Zone.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, confirmed the updated figures in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that repatriation efforts are ongoing but constrained by documentation challenges.

"The number of Zimbabweans killed in a foreign conflict is now 18. The State is seized with the repatriation of only four of those, as there are issues around the documentation of the others," he said.

Information Minister Soda Zhemu previously said authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle recruitment networks believed to be behind the trafficking of citizens into the conflict.

"Law enforcement has been instructed to identify, track and dismantle the criminal networks behind this trafficking," he said, describing the scheme as a "sophisticated" system of deception and exploitation, often driven through social media platforms.

Reports indicate that some recruits had their travel documents confiscated and were forced into frontline roles with minimal or no military training.

The government says it has tightened regulation of private employment agencies, which are viewed as key entry points for recruitment abroad. Zimbabwe currently has 57 registered agencies, all now subject to stricter vetting and licensing requirements.

Officials have also confirmed ongoing engagement with Russian authorities to facilitate both the repatriation of remains and the safe return of those still alive.

Zimbabwe previously acknowledged that at least 15 nationals had died in the conflict linked to Russia's war in Ukraine, with more than 60 others believed to still be deployed on the frontlines.

Authorities have urged citizens to verify overseas job offers through official channels, warning that many recruiters disappear once individuals are deployed, injured, or captured.

The issue reflects a broader regional trend, with several African countries — including Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa — reporting similar cases of citizens being drawn into the conflict.

Ukrainian intelligence estimates that more than 1,700 individuals from 36 African countries have been recruited to fight, highlighting the scale of the phenomenon across the continent.
