Human Rights lawyer Pedzisayi Ruhanya has accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government of turning Zimbabwe into a circus.
Ruhanya was speaking after a Mutare man was arrested and denied bail for accusing President Emerson Mnangagwa of failing to properly run the country as he could no longer afford to buy beer.
"Zimbabwe is a circus. What offence is committed if a citizen says a public leader is a failure."Ruhanya said. "So in this cold weather a Mutare resident is arrested, locked up, denied bail for saying President Mnangagwa is a failure. Then someone says Mnangagwa has given us too much freedom!"
Ruhanya added that African leaders should interrogate the role of military dictatorships in the continent.
"The resurgence of military dictatorships in Africa requires the AU and African citizens to interrogate the role of the military in public and civilian affairs especially in electoral politics. Zimbabwe is one such regime with pseudo democratic credentials following military roles
"The idea that unpopular civilian regimes such as the case in Zimbabwe rope in military elites to block democratic breakthroughs using violence in order to protect their ill-gotten economic interests requires a pragmatic political stratagem to halt DEMOCRATIC reveals using the gun."
Tinashe Dembo appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe on Friday who denied him bail.
It is the State's case that on June 12, 2019, the accused was at Villa Sports Bar, where he allegedly made an abusive statement concerning Mnangagwa.
He reportedly said: "President Emmerson Mnangagwa ibenzi ratadza kugadzirisa economy yeZimbabwe, ikozvino zvinhu zvese zvakudhura, nyangwe doro chairo
(President Emmerson Mnangagwa is a fool who has failed to manage the Zimbabwean economy to an extent that everything is now expense including beer).
