'Chivayo's source of wealth must be investigated'
4 hrs ago | Views

Former legislator and opposition activist Amos Chibaya has called for a thorough investigation into businessman Wicknell Chivayo's source of wealth, stating that the probe is long overdue. Chibaya raised the concern while speaking to NewZimbabwe.com at the 2025 Workers Day event organized by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), where the theme for the year was "Ending Corruption".
Chivayo, a well-known figure in Zimbabwe's business and political circles, has been embroiled in numerous tender scandals over the years. The businessman, who is often seen splurging on luxury items and gifting prominent figures—including artists and church leaders—has raised suspicions about the legitimacy of his wealth.
Chibaya, who has been outspoken about corruption in Zimbabwe, expressed concern over the disparities in wealth distribution, particularly when many ordinary workers are struggling to survive. "I am sure you took note of the fact that the 2025 ZCTU theme talks about ending corruption. On the issue of corruption, I do support the team from ZCTU. You can see that Chivayo is busy distributing vehicles, giving people money and all. But the question is, where is that money coming from? Sadly, there is no investigation whatsoever, no arrest whatsoever," Chibaya said.
Chivayo's lavish lifestyle and spending on high-profile individuals have led to growing questions regarding his financial dealings, with many speculating that his wealth may stem from state tenders and other questionable business ventures. His name has been associated with several government contracts, and there are concerns that he may be benefitting from misallocated taxpayer funds.
Chibaya argued that Zimbabwe's national resources should be equitably shared among all citizens, not just concentrated in the hands of the elite. "We need a system where the national resources are distributed fairly among all citizens. Currently, we are seeing a situation where only a select few benefit, while the majority of workers continue to reel in poverty," Chibaya said.
Despite the controversy surrounding his business dealings, Chivayo has yet to face any serious legal consequences or investigations into the source of his wealth. Chibaya's call for accountability reflects growing frustration among Zimbabweans, particularly workers, who feel that corruption continues to undermine their livelihoods.
As the country grapples with economic challenges, the demand for transparency and fair distribution of resources has become an increasingly central issue in Zimbabwean politics. The call for a probe into Chivayo's wealth adds to the broader conversation about tackling corruption and ensuring that public funds are used for the benefit of all citizens.
