CVR online scams on the rise

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has raised the alarm over a surge in online scams targeting citizens seeking services from the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR). In an official statement, the ministry warned that fraudsters have been impersonating CVR officials and using fake online platforms to deceive the public with bogus offers for vehicle registration, number plates, and driving licences.

According to the ministry, these scams involve fraudsters requesting payments into personal bank accounts, claiming they can fast-track services at the CVR. In some cases, victims were misled with promises that they could collect completed documents directly from CVR offices after making online payments.

The CVR has moved to clarify that its legitimate online booking platform is used solely for managing backlog appointments for driver's licences. It does not handle vehicle registrations or accept any online payments. Authorities emphasised that any request for payment through unofficial channels is fraudulent and must be ignored.

The ministry further stressed that all official transactions must be conducted in person at designated CVR offices. Members of the public were urged to be vigilant and avoid transferring money to individual accounts or dealing with unverified agents.

In response to the growing threat, the ministry released the CVR's official email contacts for verification of services and reporting of suspicious activity. It has also encouraged affected individuals to immediately report any suspected scams to the CVR or the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

As public demand for registration and licensing services continues to rise, the government reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens from online fraud and maintaining trust in its service delivery systems.
