A Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officer has appeared before the courts on fraud charges after allegedly duping a woman out of US$1,500 by falsely claiming he could influence the outcome of her brother's criminal case.

Dominic Nyemba (28), who is stationed at Harare Central Prison, is accused of misrepresenting that he could secure a non-custodial sentence for the complainant's brother in exchange for money.

According to the State, the complainant, Emily Gombiro, visited her brother, Simbarashe Ruzema, at Harare Central Prison on June 6 this year. Ruzema is currently in custody facing a culpable homicide charge.

It is alleged that during the visit, Nyemba approached Gombiro and claimed he had the ability to facilitate favourable treatment for her brother's case if she paid US$1,000. He allegedly told her the money would be passed on to the presiding magistrate and prosecutor handling the matter.

Believing the representation, Gombiro reportedly met Nyemba outside the Harare Magistrates' Court at Rotten Row on June 8 and handed over the requested amount.

The court heard that Nyemba allegedly demanded a further US$500 the following day. The additional request reportedly raised Gombiro's suspicions, prompting her to report the matter to the police.

Investigations led to Nyemba's arrest and subsequent appearance in court.

He was granted bail of US$100 and remanded to June 23 for routine remand proceedings.

The case remains under investigation.
