A teenage boy from Madlambuzi, Matabeleland South, has been sentenced to six months in prison after stabbing a 15-year-old girl when she rejected his romantic advances.
Eighteen-year-old Mthabeseni Ncube appeared before Plumtree Magistrate Joshua Nembaware, where he pleaded guilty to assault with an okapi knife.
According to prosecutor Sheila Nyathi, the incident occurred after the victim, Sukoluhle Ndebele, attended a traditional function that extended late into the night. Ncube followed her as she left and professed his love. When Ndebele rejected him, an argument erupted outside her homestead, prompting Ncube to stab her on the forehead.
Villagers quickly intervened, restraining Ncube before handing him over to police.
Magistrate Nembaware sentenced Ncube to 12 months in prison, suspending six months on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within five years. The remaining six months are to be served in jail with no option of a fine.
The case underscores the dangers of teenage violence and the importance of community vigilance in protecting young people from harm.
