NTABAZINDUNA – The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development on Thursday hosted journalists at Ntabazinduna Tollgate to demonstrate the new e-tag system, part of government’s drive to modernise toll collection, reduce congestion and curb revenue leakages.
During the media tour and operational demonstration, Permanent Secretary Engineer Joy Makumbe said the initiative would improve efficiency and ease traffic flow on major highways.
“We are rolling out this system in various toll plazas and this is testimony that we are developing our infrastructure to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. This will enable decongestion of our major highways,” Makumbe said.
He added that the Ministry was implementing the system through partnerships to ensure motorists experience ease of doing business.
The e-tag system allows for seamless, cashless payments as vehicles pass through tollgates, minimising stoppages and enhancing efficiency. According to the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), the project is part of a broader Tollgate Development Plan, which includes upgrading ICT infrastructure and introducing a hybrid system to safeguard current jobs.
Journalists witnessed how InstaToll’s technology enables payments via card facilities or e-tags without requiring vehicles to stop. ZINARA plans to pilot the project soon, with upgrades earmarked for key tollgates such as Norton, Kadoma and Ruwa, aimed at boosting capacity and reducing waiting times.
The Ministry’s initiative aligns with government efforts to harness digital solutions for better road management and improved revenue collection.
