HWANGE – The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has assured the public that contractors working on roads near Hwange National Park and other protected areas will prioritise wildlife protection during construction.

Engineer Jarawani Kangara, Director of Roads, said negotiations were underway to ensure sustainable measures are implemented so that detours do not displace or disturb wildlife, thereby reducing the risk of human–wildlife conflict.

“We are committed to working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Wildlife, along with other stakeholders, to secure both human and animal safety,” Kangara said.

The ministry emphasised its proactive approach to balancing infrastructure development with conservation, recognising the ecological sensitivity of Hwange National Park — Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve and home to diverse species.

Concerns had been raised over potential disruptions caused by road projects adjacent to wildlife habitats. The ministry’s engagement with relevant departments aims to establish protocols that mitigate risks and safeguard wildlife corridors.

Meanwhile, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona expressed confidence that the rehabilitation of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Highway will be completed by mid-2026, describing it as a major milestone in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure modernisation drive.

Speaking in Bulawayo, Mhona said government was accelerating road development nationwide as part of efforts to transform the transport network.

“On the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Highway, we have got eight contractors on that road. And come 2026, mid-year, we will be done with that entire road network, right up to Victoria Park,” Mhona said.

Once complete, the upgraded highway is expected to boost tourism, enhance regional trade and stimulate economic activity, particularly in Matabeleland North Province.
