A Zimbabwean national, Mandla Ncube, has been named among those killed in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, raising fresh concerns over the recruitment of Southern Africans into the conflict under promises of lucrative pay.

Reports indicate that Ncube was recruited through an agent operating in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His widow is believed to be residing in South Africa, although further details surrounding his deployment and death remain unclear.

Investigative journalist Zenzele Ndebele, reporting for Newsroom Africa, revealed that several Zimbabweans have been drawn into the war after being enticed with promises of monthly salaries ranging between US$2,000 and US$2,500. According to Ndebele, at least three Zimbabwean nationals have died in the conflict to date.

The revelations point to an emerging pattern in which foreign nationals, including Zimbabweans living in South Africa, are being recruited - often through informal or shadowy networks - to participate in the war. Many are reportedly motivated by economic hardship and the prospect of earning incomes far higher than those available at home or in the region.

Authorities in Zimbabwe and South Africa have not yet publicly commented on the reported recruitment of Zimbabweans or on Ncube's death. The developments have, however, sparked debate over the vulnerability of unemployed or undocumented migrants to exploitation by agents linked to foreign conflicts.

As the war continues, the deaths of foreign nationals like Ncube underscore the far-reaching human cost of the conflict, extending well beyond the borders of Eastern Europe into communities across Africa.
