A Harare man has appeared in court facing allegations of money laundering involving US$32 000.
Ragayi Chipanga, who is represented by lawyer Moffat Makuvatseni, was remanded in custody to today for bail consideration by Harare magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka.
Prosecutors told the court that Chipanga was allegedly living lavishly, acquiring several assets and developing his rural home in Village A, Nyahukwe area, Rusape, Manicaland. The State further alleged that he hosted an extravagant wedding at his residence, raising suspicions over the source of his wealth.
According to the State, police officers raided Chipanga's home, where they arrested him and seized a Honda Vezel, a Toyota Probox and US$1 700 in cash.
When questioned, Chipanga reportedly claimed that the assets were acquired through proceeds from gold prospecting in Bindura. However, the prosecution alleges that he failed to produce the required legal documentation to support his claims.
The seized vehicles and cash were subsequently confiscated as suspected proceeds of crime.
Chipanga remains in custody pending the court's determination on his bail application.
