Flashy businessman Wicknell Chivayo has splashed out about US$34 million on a long-range Gulfstream G550 private jet, further cementing his reputation for conspicuous displays of wealth.

Chivayo, 45, who has built his fortune through lucrative State-linked contracts, revealed the purchase on his social media platforms, where he also disclosed the aircraft's hefty price tag.

Flight tracking platform FlightAware lists the previous owner of the jet, bearing tail number N550GA, as Gulfstream Leasing, a United States-based company. The aircraft first entered service in 2012.

The Gulfstream G550 is powered by twin Rolls-Royce BR700 engines and boasts an intercontinental range of approximately 12 500 kilometres, enabling non-stop flights between continents. It typically accommodates between 14 and 19 passengers, cruises at altitudes of up to 41 000 feet and can reach top speeds of about 941 km/h.

Although payment for the aircraft has reportedly been completed, aviation sources say the jet is expected to undergo interior customisation and possibly repainting before its anticipated delivery in March.

Chivayo, a close associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has over the past year been travelling in a Bombardier Challenger 300. It remains unclear what will become of that aircraft once the newly acquired Gulfstream G550 enters service.

The purchase has already drawn attention on social media, where Chivayo frequently showcases his luxury assets, often sparking public debate about wealth, business and politics in Zimbabwe.
