Dynamos play their trump card

IN a bold move aimed at killing transfer speculation and restoring calm at a turbulent Dynamos, the Glamour Boys have handed the captain's armband to midfield enforcer Shadreck Nyahwa.
The decision is widely seen as a firm message to interested suitors such as Hardrock and TelOne, who had been circling the combative midfielder amid growing rumours of an imminent exit.
Speculation reached fever pitch last week when Nyahwa missed several training sessions, coinciding with Hardrock's public interest in securing his services. But the script flipped dramatically this week when the left-footed hardman returned to training — not just as a squad member, but as the new leader of a rebuilding DeMbare.
Nyahwa takes over the armband from Emmanuel Jalai, who recently completed a move to South Africa's topflight after joining Durban City.
A senior Dynamos executive, speaking to NewsDay Sport on condition of anonymity, played down the transfer drama, insisting the club was never rattled.
"Nyahwa has a running contract until December 31. We were never worried about the rumours because he had given us his word," said the official.
"He is one of the few senior heads left in the team, and we value his leadership. That is why he is our captain."
While the captaincy comes with perks — including access to a high-end club vehicle — the official was quick to stress that leadership status does not guarantee a starting berth.
"We have assembled a very strong squad, and he, just like everyone else, will have to work very hard to get a place in the team," he added.
Nyahwa now finds himself straddling two Dynamos eras.
A brutal exodus at the end of last season left the club with barely a dozen retained players, as the core of the team that won a historic third straight Chibuku Super Cup was dismantled.
Key figures including Jalai, Temptation Chiwunga, goalkeeper Prince Tafiremutsa, Vusa Ngwenya and Felix Hammond all departed in search of greener pastures.
In response, Dynamos launched an aggressive recruitment drive through open trials and unveiled a provisional squad featuring 17 new players — a sweeping reset that signals a new chapter for the club.
Among the notable arrivals are goalkeeper Mathias Kigoya, defenders Isaac Landu from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Collin Mujuru, as well as attackers Perfect Chikwende, Trevor Mavhunga, William Manondo and Moses Demera.
The rebuilt side will be thrown straight into the deep end.
Dynamos are set to face arch-rivals Highlanders in a charity match in Bulawayo on February 15, before locking horns with reigning league champions Scottland in the season-opening Castle Challenge Cup.
Off the pitch, familiar faces have also returned, with Genesis Mangombe back at the helm as head coach and Vincent Chawonza resuming duties as executive chairman.
After narrowly escaping relegation on the final day last season, Dynamos supporters will be hoping the Nyahwa-led reboot delivers more than symbolism — and finally steadies the Glamour Boys' famously rocking ship.
