Tropical Cyclone Gezani, which recently made landfall in the Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar, has re-entered the Mozambique Channel and is forecast to regain strength later this week, the Meteorological Services Department has said.
In its latest weather report, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) indicated that although the system weakened while crossing Madagascar, it is expected to reorganise over warm ocean waters. "After gradually weakening as it crosses Madagascar, Tropical Cyclone Gezani is expected to re-enter the Mozambique Channel on Wednesday evening, likely as a tropical depression or moderate tropical storm. Further intensification is then forecast," the MSD said.
Zimcast also issued a severe weather warning on it's X account. Wrote Zimcast, "Heavy rains coupled with strong winds, frequent lightning and possible hailstorms expected across most parts of Zimbabwe from Saturday night and most of Sunday. Stay alert and seek shelter immediately where possible, during such storms!"
The forecaster added that Gezani could regain tropical cyclone strength by Friday as it follows a trajectory that gradually curves southwest. "Landfall on the Mozambican coast between Friday evening and Saturday is possible but remains uncertain," the MSD noted.
While the exact path and intensity remain under close monitoring, the system is already influencing weather patterns across the region. Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, frequent lightning and possible hailstorms are expected to affect most parts of Zimbabwe from Saturday night through much of Sunday.
Forecasters have warned that the storms may intensify overnight, bringing downpours that could lead to localised flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Strong winds may result in fallen trees, damaged roofs and power disruptions, while lightning poses a significant risk to people outdoors. Hailstorms are also possible in isolated areas.
Residents have been urged to remain alert and take precautionary measures. Authorities advise the public to seek shelter immediately during thunderstorms, avoid open fields and tall isolated trees, and refrain from using electrical appliances during intense lightning activity. Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution as reduced visibility and slippery roads may heighten the risk of accidents.
Communities in flood-prone areas are advised to closely monitor official weather updates and be prepared to move to safer ground if necessary, as emergency services remain on standby ahead of the anticipated severe weather conditions over the weekend.
