Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe has returned to Zimbabwe after being fined R600 000 and deported from South Africa following the finalisation of his court case in Johannesburg.
Chatunga arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport just before 9pm on Thursday night, hours after proceedings were concluded at the Alexandra Magistrates' Court.
His co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, was sentenced to an effective three years' imprisonment in connection with a shooting incident that occurred in Johannesburg earlier this year.
The court heard that Matonhodze received multiple sentences on different counts — including attempted murder, immigration violations, obstruction of justice, and unlawful possession of ammunition — which will run concurrently.
Chatunga and Matonhodze were both represented by senior counsel Mike Hellens during the proceedings.
Court records indicate that Chatunga admitted to being in South Africa illegally and acknowledged pointing a firearm. The firearm-related charge stems from an earlier incident allegedly linked to an altercation at the Mugabe family residence in Hyde Park in February.
Following the conclusion of the case, Chatunga was escorted from court to OR Tambo International Airport for immediate deportation back to Zimbabwe.
Matonhodze, meanwhile, is expected to be deported after serving his prison sentence.
