What should have been remembered as one of the biggest football occasions Kwekwe has hosted in recent years ended in chaos, with riot police forced onto the pitch and supporters trading blows as violence forced the abandonment of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash between Hardrock FC and Dynamos FC.
For much of the afternoon, Chahwanda Stadium had delivered a lively atmosphere, with packed stands, colour and noise as both teams produced a competitive contest. But the match collapsed in dramatic fashion around the 80th minute.
Trouble began when supporters from both sides started throwing bottles and other objects at each other from sections behind the Dynamos goal. The situation escalated rapidly as tensions spilled over from the terraces.
Cornered Dynamos supporters then breached security and entered the pitch, damaging banners and forcing players and officials into confusion. Moments later, violence spread across the field as rival fans exchanged punches and the match descended into disorder.
Riot police eventually intervened to restore order, but by then the damage had already been done.
Match Commissioner Ruzive Ruzive confirmed the abandonment of the fixture.
"The match has been abandoned," he said.
Before the chaos erupted, the encounter had been evenly contested, with both sides struggling to create clear chances in a tight first half.
Dynamos eventually took the lead when Leeroy Mavunga delivered a dangerous cross that led to an own goal by Hardrock defender Misheck Ngwenya under pressure.
Hardrock responded strongly in the second half after introducing substitutes Tinashe Mashaireni and Wilfred Madzungu, who helped shift momentum in their favour.
Their pressure paid off in the 68th minute when referee Mhaka Magare awarded a penalty after ruling that Dynamos captain Shadreck Nyahwa had handled the ball inside the box. Madzungu converted from the spot to level the score at 1-1.
The equaliser lifted the intensity inside Chahwanda Stadium - but also coincided with the start of the collapse in crowd discipline.
Soon after, objects began flying from the stands, forcing the football to be abandoned entirely as security concerns overtook the match.
What began as a highly anticipated league fixture ended instead as another stark reminder of ongoing crowd control challenges in Zimbabwean football.
Hardrock FC:
Mateyaunga, Mucheto (Gavaza 27'), Muringai, Diro, Ngwenya, Bamara, Phiri (Mudadi 63'), Makunike (Mashaireni 45'), Simelane (Nyilenda 63'), Matinha (Madzungu 45'), Dlamini.
