Zimbabwe police seal off NCA offices in fresh crackdown

Police reportedly cordoned off the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) offices in central Harare on Wednesday ahead of the organisation's scheduled national leadership meeting, with party leaders allegedly prevented from accessing the premises.

NCA president Professor Lovemore Madhuku said police had sealed off the party's offices, disrupting the planned meeting.

The development comes amid heightened political tensions following the enactment of Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Act No. 3, which extends the terms of the President and Parliament and introduces significant changes to the country's constitutional and electoral framework.

The NCA has been among the most vocal organisations opposing the constitutional changes.

Earlier this year, suspected State security agents allegedly broke into the NCA offices in what the organisation claimed was an attempt to disrupt meetings held in opposition to the constitutional amendment.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he was still verifying the reports.

"I am still checking on the claims," Nyathi said.

At the time of publication, police had not issued an official explanation for the reported deployment or confirmed whether officers had restricted access to the NCA premises.
