Nine Harare men, allegedly involved in a spate of armed robberies within the capital and getting away with property valued at more than $70 000, have been arrested.

The accused of Ephraim Matiza (22), Trust Misola (27), Craig Musasa (27), Taurai Fagai (24), Roy Mafunga (27), Robson Pangai (27), Mustapha Ngunda (36), Jonathan Muala (31) and Jonathan Muchemwa (31) appeared before Harare magistrate Milton Serima on Monday, charged with armed robbery.

It is the state's case that on October 12 at Rockvie Park in Ruwa, the nine manhandled a gardener at the premises where he was employed before tying both his hands and legs. Prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa further alleged that after blindfolding him, they forced open the kitchen door and stole a safe containing $30 000, a HP laptop and Stanbic cheque books.

They loaded the loot into their getaway car, a Toyota Chaser and sped off the crime scene. On November 6, the gang proceeded to number 58 Gaydon Road, Greystone Park in Harare, armed with a revolver.

They scaled a precast wall and pointed the firearm at the housemaid, demanding to know the whereabouts of Bi Heyan.

Matiza and his partners in crime allegedly force marched the maid  upstairs where Heyan was busy on his laptop and pointed a gun at him while others tied his hands and legs using computer cables.

They allegedly ransacked the house and stole a chubb safe containing three pistols, 300 by 9mm rounds of ammunition and company documents.

The gang allegedly sped away in a grey Honda CRV registration number ACA 9323 and a silver Nissan Gloria with registration ACV 6755.

However, their luck ran out after police detectives got information on their movements, leading to the accused persons' arrest. In a bid to evade arrest, the gang was allegedly involved in a shoot-out with police detectives. Upon arrest, the detectives recovered three firearms, ammunition and some of the stolen property. The group is in custody and will be back in court on December 8.
