A 46-YEAR-OLD Beigbridge man pleaded guilty to smuggling goods worth $1 082 from South Africa in contravention of Section 182 of the Customs and Excise Act Chapter 23:02 when he appeared in the Beigbridge Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Wilfred Zikhalie of Dulibadzimu in Beitbridge pleaded guilty to smuggling 10 crates of Castle Lite beer, 19 boxes (12x750ml) cooking oil, 10 boxes (12x375mls) cooking oil, 12 boxes Frimax potato chips, 12 boxes Green Brite soap, four boxes baby crez, 83 packs of jiggies, one box sweets, one box Cremora, 9×24 packs can drinks, 52 boxes Marie biscuits, 2×6 two-litre drinks from South Africa.

Zikhalie was given an option of paying a fine of $350 by June 15 2014 or face 90 days in jail.

Cases of smuggling are rife in the border town as most of the criminals point out unemployment as the major reason driving them to unlawful activities.

Crimes of smuggling cigarettes from Zimbabwe to South Africa are among the most common cases in Beitbridge.
