Zifa ignore Fifa warning on players who accepted bribes

Despite the axe hanging over their heads for accepting bribes to throw matches during a Far East tour two years ago, the Mamelodi Sundowns pair of Nyasha Mushekwi and Method Mwanjali as well as Kaizer Chiefs Thomas Sweswe have been included in Zimbabwe's Afcon qualifying squad to play Mali on March 26.

Fifa has warned Zifa that they expect the trio who have admitted their guilt to be punished severely.

Amakhosi's Knowledge Musona is also in coach Norman Mapeza's squad that gathers in Harare on March 20, as is Platinum Stars veteran minder Tapuwa Kapini.

Ajax Cape Town forward Khama Billiat has been rewarded for his consistency with a first call-up to the Warriors squad.

Billiat's Urban Warriors teammates Tafadzwa Rusike and Willard Katsande have however, been overlooked for the Battle of Bamako.

There were no places for veteran Sundowns skipper Esrom Nyandoro and his Brazilians teammate Lionel Mtizwa, Quincy Antipas and Ashley Rambanapasi who were part of the side that drew with Cape Verde.

The Warriors will not be short of experienced company with the coach, who plied much of this trade at Ajax Cape Town, retaining seasoned campaigners like Tinashe Nengomasha of Kaizer Chiefs, Mwanjali, Austrian-based Justice Majabvi, Al Hilal hotshot Edward Sadomba, and Onismor Bhasera who is plying his trade with Plymouth Argyle in England.

Mapeza has been appointed Zimbabwe coach for a third spell in the last four years.

He has signed a one-year contract and fills a vacancy since last September when Zimbabwe appointed Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet only to deport him after three days because he did not have a work permit.

Mapeza, 38, had been Zimbabwe's caretaker coach for two matches in 2007 and then again for four games last year, including a friendly loss to Brazil just before the World Cup in neighbouring South Africa.
