FINALLY the dream of the Plumtree community has come true after a team based in the border town got promoted to the top-flight league. That team, Bulawayo Chiefs, have changed their name to Plumtree Chiefs.

Club chairman Lovemore Sibanda confirmed the latest developments.

In a speech read on his behalf at the club's end-of-year awards ceremony, Sibanda said the team honours the people of Plumtree who stood firm by their team throughout the season.

"It is my pleasure today to announce that this project shall be known as Plumtree Chiefs Football Club. This is in line with the aspirations of the people of Plumtree, Bulilima and Mangwe who have religiously supported the team and its other project, the Chiefs Academy" Sibanda said.

Mangwe Member of Parliament Obedingwa Mguni emphasised player discipline saying that it is the best tool to use if one is to win pieces of silverware.

"We are grateful to our team for doing such a great job. I would like to challenge players to be disciplined so that they take this team far. I will personally challenge Ian Gorowa to come and select players from Plumtree to play for the national team. I hope people from Plumtree will use this team to develop their town because the team has also brought business to the town," Mguni said.

Meanwhile, Chiefs skipper Lindelani Ncube was voted player of the year and the most consistent player of the season.

George Majika who netted eight goals in the 2013 season got the top goalscorer of the year award and he was also voted players' player of the year while Emmanuel Ndebele's goal against New West at Dingumuzi Stadium was voted goal of the season.

The most promising player award went to 20-year-old Wallace Magalane. Surprise Ndlovu scooped the most disciplined player of the year while Proud Zireni got the president's award. Serve for the top goalscorer of the year and the player of the season, for all other awards players got $150 each and trophies.

Club secretary-general Dumisami Sibanda said plans for the new stadium are under way and they hope the Plumtree community would help.
