Sports and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane has hailed financial firm BancABC for complementing Government's health and wellness agenda through promoting sports.
Reacting to news that BancABC are set to continue their romance with football by dressing print and electronic journalists for their challenge match set for Mt Pleasant in Harare tomorrow, Minister Hlongwane highlighted the importance of playing sport at all levels.
"There is a global epidemic of non-communicable diseases which could otherwise be arrested by interventions in the domain of physical exercise regimes.
"My ministry is busy crafting a National Physical Fitness Programme which we think is going to go a long way in terms of picking up the bill on non-communicable diseases by our colleagues in the Ministry of Health (and Child Care) and efforts by our journalists to take part in sport and not just write about it are encouraging.
"It is clear that sport cannot be played without adequate equipment and I would like to commend BancABC for complementing our efforts to ensure that sport is played at every level of society by sponsoring the journalists with football kit," said Hlongwane.
The match pitting the scribes will be the curtain-raiser to the annual Gold Heroes Cup final, a social soccer gala that has this year attracted 12 teams.
In announcing their partnership with the Sports Journalists Association, BancABC – who also bankroll Castle Lager Premier Soccer League powerhouses Dynamos and Highlanders – revealed they would also be giving a football kit to scribes from the Southern Region.
SPOJA Northern Region chairman and The Herald Sports Reporter Edison Chikamhi welcomed the BancABC gesture.
"In such a tough economic environment, BancABC have once again proven to be a true friend of sport and as the body that represents sports journalists we pledge to guard this partnership jealously.
"As scribes we have often been accused of not appreciating the sporting codes we report on, especially football, but we are glad that this tournament affords us a chance to show that we can walk our talk," said Chi- kamhi.
Some of the journalists expected to form the backbone of the print media team are The Sunday Mail duo of Ishemunyoro Chingwere and Langton Nyakwenda as well as the H-Metro trio of Chipo Sabeta, Mugove Chigada and Rest Mutore.
Star FM sportscaster Howard Musonza will skipper an electronic media side that is likely to feature Barry Manandi, Mike Madoda, Ian Zvoma, Francis Nyamutsamba, Butler Nhepure and Yvonne Mangunda.
