The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) is formulating consumer protection guidelines for the industry.

The guidelines will spell out the code of conduct for service providers, consumer rights and standard complaints handling procedures among other provisions.

POTRAZ has already begun consulting customers and service providers in the sector to get their input, before the formulation of the consumer protection guidelines.

Speaking at a consultative workshop, Information Society Initiative Trust executive director, Mr Rueben Gwatidzo said the guidelines should define the quality of service that consumers can expect so that they know when they are being short-changed.

Global Ping managing director, Mrs Miriam Mutizwa said consumers have not received fair value from service providers and the new regulations should address this.

Earlier this year, POTRAZ commissioned a cost of capital study for operators and the results are expected next year in a move aimed at coming up with a fair tariff pricing model.

Zimbabwe's telecommunications sector has grown rapidly over the past 5 years and teledensity is rated at 100 percent mainly due to massive investment by mobile network operators.
