SHURUGWI - The Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube (MP), has commissioned and handed over a US$300,000 gold milling and processing centre to artisanal and small-scale miners in Shurugwi District, marking a major step in the government’s drive to formalise the informal mining sector.
"Funded by Cheng-Xi Chengetai Investments, this centre will provide accessible and affordable milling services to over 5,000 beneficiaries," Minister Ncube said.
The facility includes three round mills, a jaw crusher, three hammer mills, water reservoirs, an administration office block, and other support infrastructure. It is designed to promote safe gold mining and processing methods, reducing risks to public health and the environment.
Minister Ncube praised Cheng-Xi Investments for its role in responsible mining, and for advancing Zimbabwe-China bilateral mining agreements. He reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering youth and growing the local economy through inclusive development.
"The centre is expected to boost gold production, create jobs, and uplift communities. In the first nine months of 2025, small-scale miners delivered 24.5 tonnes of gold to Fidelity Gold Refinery, out of a national total of 33 tonnes," Ncube noted.
He also urged other corporates to emulate Cheng-Xi's Corporate Social Investment Programmes, and warned drug peddlers, including celebrities and high-profile individuals, that the law will catch up with them.
The commissioning of the centre is seen as a milestone in promoting responsible mining practices, and a key pillar in achieving Vision 2030.
