Dudu Manhenga evicted over rent arrears

Jazz sensation Dudu Manhenga has failed to pay $7,000 rent, forcing her to move out of an upmarket house, located in Harare's Vainona suburb.
The 33-year-old musician is currently out on bail pending an appeal against her sentence over culpable homicide relating to a 2010 accident that claimed the life of motorcyclist Graham Martin Millward.
She and her family have since vacated number 2 Barturn Close, Vainona, Harare, after the owner of the house Sharad Rana cancelled the lease agreement she had with the talented vocalist.
Rana's lawyer Kudzayi Kadzere from Kadzere, Hungwe and Mandevere Legal Practitioners confirmed the development to the Daily News.
"Dudu surrendered the keys to the property as she has been struggling to pay rates and rentals for the premises," said Kadzere.
"We confirm that she has moved out together with her family although she is yet to pay the arrears."
The lawyers wrote a letter dated March 20, 2014 to Manhenga, advising her about the cancellation of the lease agreement over the failure to pay the rentals.
"Our client instructs us that over an extended period of time you have failed to pay rent and operating costs in full thereby accruing arrears in the sum of $7 830,87, as at March 17, 2014.
"Our client is not pleased at all with your conduct and has thus decided to cancel your lease agreement," reads part of the letter.
The lawyers also said that Dudu no longer had any right to continue staying at the premises in light of the developments.
"You are therefore required to immediately vacate the premises and handover the keys to Gabriel Real Estate (Private) Limited.
"You are also required to immediately settle the full outstanding amount here at our offices together with 10 percent collection commission thereon.
"Failure to comply with the above demand shall result in legal action being taken against you," the letter further reads.
Dudu's husband Blessing Muparutsa responded to the letter the following day, advising Gabriel Real Estate that the family had already vacated the house. He made an undertaking to settle the debt over one year.
"I am looking at clearing the amount due within a space of one year…I commit to pay amounts ranging from $250 to $500 per month in settling the account.
"Then I will move the Zesa bill to my new account," part of Maparutsa's letter reads.
