"Think Like A Man" claimed a second straight win at weekend box office race in North America with an impressive 18 million U.S. dollars, holding back a few new entries, according to studio estimates.
The Sony/Screen Gem's romantic comedy has earned 60.9 million U. S. dollars since it opened last weekend, making it one of the most successful African-American movies of recent times.
The film, which is based on TV/radio comedian Steve Harvey's 2009 self-help bestseller "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man," stars a primarily African-American cast including Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Regina Hall and others, and tells how four men tried to turn the tables on their mates who are readers of Harvey's best selling book and hooked on his advice.
One of the newcomers, Sony animated 3D picture "The Pirates! Band Of Misfits" was in the number two spot with an 11.4 million dollars over its first three days, almost 2 million dollars above projections.
The film, co-directed by Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt, and adapted from a novel by Gideon Defoe, is the most logistically ambitious stop-motion film to come out of Aardman Animations. Peter Lord co-directed the gleeful "Chicken Run" a few years back. The 55-million-dollar animation has already earned 63.7 million dollars overseas. About 76 percent of its audience were children under 12 and their parents.
Stop motion animation is one of the oldest movie techniques where physical objects are manipulated literally frame by frame to give the illusion of movement.
The Warner Bros. drama "The Lucky One",starring Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, slipped to third place in its second weekend with 11.32 million dollars this weekend and 39.9 million dollars overall.
After six weeks running, "The Hunger Games" managed to stay solid at box office. The film finished in fourth place with a 11. 25 million dollars. The Lionsgate's adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young adult novel has now grossed a total of 372.5 million dollars at the North America box office.
Another newcomer -- Universal's romcom "The Five Year Engagement" -- settled a fifth place debut with a disappointing 11. 2 million dollars, only half of what some observers had predicted. The film, produced by Judd Apatow, failed to surprise the box office in its debut, despite popular actor Jason Segel from TV series"How I Met Your Mother."
Rounding out the top 10 most popular films in North America this weekend were "Safe" (7.7 million dollars), "The Raven" (7.3 million dollars), "Chimpanzee" (5.5 million dollars), "The Three Stooges" (5.4 million dollars) and "The Cabin In The Woods" (4.5 million dollars).
