Police in Gweru have launched a manhunt for suspects travelling in a Ford Everest who are allegedly circulating counterfeit United States currency across the city, targeting businesses with fake high-denomination notes.

The alert was issued on Sunday by the Zimbabwe Republic Police Gweru District Community Relations Liaison Office after a report that the suspects allegedly defrauded a retail shop in Athlone suburb at around 6pm on April 26.

Police say the group is believed to be using a mid-size seven-seater SUV, a Ford Everest with registration number AHH 0950, and was last seen circulating fake US$100 notes in the city.

Authorities have urged business owners and cashiers to be extra vigilant when handling high-value currency, especially from unfamiliar customers. They advised the public to check for standard security features such as watermarks, embedded security threads and colour-shifting ink when verifying notes.

Residents have been encouraged to immediately report any sightings of the vehicle or individuals attempting to use suspicious currency to the nearest police station. The public has also been given contact numbers for tips linked to the investigation as authorities intensify efforts to track down the suspects.

Police say the warning is part of ongoing measures to curb rising incidents of counterfeit currency circulation, which continue to affect small businesses and traders in urban centres.
