ONE of Zimbabwe's oldest gospel sungura artistes, whose roots are in Mutare, Hosiah Chipanga, recently released his first DVD album, Mabasa. Chipanga, who was assisted by Madzibaba John Karembera of the Johanne Masowe YeChishanu, Yenyenyedzi Nomwe described the release of his album as a milestone achievement which will help his fans understand his music much better.
Mabasa has six videos and there are two bonus tracks, Mateo 5, which is a tribute to the Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe president, Johannes Ndanga whom he described as a Messiah for all affiliates of the various apostolic sects.
The other bonus track is Kwachu kwachu by Chipanga in live performance at the Platinum.
Said Chipanga: "My name has been associated with a lot of controversy, but the DVD I have just released will definitely wipe away all the debate. Some people think my music is political, but it is not. I believe that lack of videos to accompany my work was one of the reasons why I was viewed as such, but that is now a thing of the past,"
"I got help from Big Jokar Records and they are not done with me yet. We will be working on another DVD, Chiedza with Madzibaba John and I can promise you that it will be even better than Mabasa. My DVDs can be bought from my home as well as at Big Jokar Studios in Dangamvura."
Madzibaba John, who is the owner of Big Jokar Records, said the success of Chipanga's album was a way of showing the credibility of his studios as well as his sole desire to see Mutare-based artistes shining to stardom.
"This DVD will go a long way in showing that the best is yet to come from vaChipanga. Much of the misconceptions on his work is partly because he is inspired by the spirit before he writes his songs. His work is also full of lessons and so creating videos for better understanding was one of the ways through which we, as Big Jokar Records could assist a friend and fellow church leader," he said.
Madzibaba John also revealed that apart from the project, Chiedza, Chipanga is working on releasing another album by the end of the year.
