Maun Police are investigating a case in which two men, a Motswana aged 24 from Chadibe and a 35-year old Zimbabwean were found in possession of 2 421 bottles of Broncleer with Codeine cough syrup at Makalamabedi veterinary gate.

The Voice reported that according to Acting Station Commander, Assistant Superintendent Zhabi Hulela, the two were arrested during a random search at the gate.

He said that some of the bottles were found hidden in a spare wheel. "We engaged Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) and we found that the goods had not been cleared."

Hulela said that the two were facing a single holding charge of non-declaration of goods and that the charge was likely to change once the investigations are complete. "We don't know what is inside the bottles and our investigations will determine whether it is anything legal."

Broncleer, also known as 'Bronco' in street lingo is a cough syrup containing codeine, alcohol content.

Excessive consumption can cause cardiac arrest, hypertension, respiratory failure, hallucination or even comatose.

The syrup that is considered the most dangerous over-the-counter drug in South Africa has since been banned in the neighbouring Zimbabwe.

It is mostly used as a quick and cheap way of getting high.

According N0.5 District Criminal Investigating Officer, Senior Superintendent Mokwadi Willie, after the couple was reported missing by their kids aged between 9 and 14 years, a search was conducted.

He said that on Tuesday they received a report of a person that was found hanging from a tree and that the police search team found a 38-year old man from Nshakazhogwe village and a decomposed body of a 35-year old woman of Boseja ward in Maun lying a short distance away in what appeared to have been a murder-suicide incident.
