Mujuru praises UZ for introducing Tonga language at tertiary level

Vice President, Joice Mujuru has commended the University of Zimbabwe for introducing Tonga language at tertiary level saying government wants to be part of the programme to ensure its success.

Speaking at the launch of Tonga language stories, essays and poems writing competitions at Luvimbi High School in Binga, Vice President Mujuru said it is unfortunate that the programme was not understood when it was initiated by President Robert Mugabe.

She said government remains committed to promoting minority languages.

Vice President said nurse training institutions should admit at least 15 Tonga student nurses to ensure easy communication when seeking treatment.

Governor and Resident Minister for Matabeleland North province, Thokozile Mathuthu said although Tonga examinations were written for the first time at Grade Seven level last year, it is the intention of the government that all languages are taught up to university level.

Twalumba Holdings Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nkululeko Sibanda commended the University of Zimbabwe for introducing Tonga language saying the writing of Tonga literature is a golden opportunity for the Batonga to tell their story without distortion.
