AN Advanced Level pupil from Gwanda High School who was caught trying to write an Ordinary Level Mathematics Paper for his friend has been slapped with a suspended sentence.
The pupil, Steve Tafara Moyo (18) of Flat 1 Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) New Camp who is an A-Level student at Gwanda High and his friend Honest Chisenga (22) of District Development Fund (DDF) Compound in Gwanda Town appeared in court to answer to fraud charges before Matabeleland South provincial magistrate Mr Reuben Mukavhi.
The two pleaded guilty and were both sentenced to six months imprisonment which was wholly suspended for five years on condition that they do not commit a similar offence within that period.
On 7 November this month, Moyo and Chisenga connived to have Moyo write an O-Level Mathematics Paper Two on behalf of Chisenga.
Chisenga was an external student who had registered to sit examinations at Sabiwa High School, about 16km from Gwanda Town.
The court heard that before the examination, Chisenga gave his identification document to Moyo.
On entering the examination room, the invigilator, Ms Simisosenkosi Sola asked Moyo to produce his identity card.
However, the plan failed after an alert Ms Sola realised that the face on the identity card did not match Moyo.
Moyo tried by all means to convince Ms Sola that the face on the identity document was his but to no avail.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Moyo's arrest.
Moyo later implicated Chisenga who was also arrested.
Mr Jefta Nyikadzinashe represented the State while Mr Thompson Mabhikwa of Mabhikwa, Hikwa and Nyathi Legal Practitioners represented Moyo and Chisenga.
