The National Blood Services Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has urged people to donate blood this Easter holiday to avoid losing lives due to lack of post-accident assistance.
This is despite the fact that NBSZ has more than 4 000 units of blood in stock.
NBSZ and the Road Safe Zimbabwe team who held a blood donor campaign ahead of the Easter festivities said it is important for more donors to come on board as it is a period associated with traffic accidents.
Road Safe Zimbabwe programmes manager, Tendai Magombo said most deaths that occur during public holidays after road traffic accidents are avoidable if post-crush assistance is offered, especially blood transfusion.
Road Safe Zimbabwe brand advocate, Hope Masike said it is imperative to give blood as it saves lives of not only accident victims, but sometimes even the donors themselves.
NBSZ public affairs manager Esther Masundah said this Easter they are pleased with their blood bank as they have over 4 000 units in stock.
"We are happy to say that we've got enough blood stocks, we have about 4 000 units in our stocks," she said.
Demand for blood normally rises during holidays due to increased accidents as people travel to different destinations and usually travel in groups for conventions and family gatherings.
Last year, Zimbabwe recorded 69 Easter deaths and 410 injuries from over 330 road accidents.
