A woman and her teenage son whose bodies were found after a car fire died of "burning and inhalation through combustion", an inquest has heard.

Catherine Mhlaba and 16-year-old Beki Ali were discovered in a burnt-out Vauxhall Vectra in Thorpe Bay, near Southend, Essex, last week.

Inquests into the two deaths were opened and adjourned in Chelmsford.

Essex Police said it was not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Detectives are investigating whether Ms Mhlaba killed her son before taking her own life in the fire.

No family were present during the brief inquest hearing. A full inquest will take place at a later date.
