Thousands of Hwange Colliery Company Limited workers who have endured more than two years without pay have been appeased by being allocated 50kg bag of maize and 10kg of rice each.

The colliery employs about 3200 people who frequently go on strike demanding salaries.

Government says the troubled coal miner  is set to retrench over 1 000 employees and dispose of its non-core assets in an effort to streamline operations.

On Wednesday, a  consignment of about 160 tonnes of maize and 32 tonnes of rice was handed over to workers  with officials saying government was deeply worried about the workers welfare.

"Each of the 3 200 households will today receive 50kg grain and a 10kg bag of rice to feed your families" a senior official in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Sede Soko said.

HCCL managing director, Thomas Makore is quoted saying they are struggling to pay $200 staff nominal allowance consistently.
