Nkayi pupils struggle to get vaccines

SCORES of school children in parts of Nkayi are queuing up to 7pm at night in order to be vaccinated against typhoid under a programme recently launched by the Health and Child Care ministry.
A survey by a local civic group, Community Podium established that children at schools such as Mhlabuyatshisa Primary School received their typhoid jabs well into the night.
The civic group said some of these children stay more than 5km from the school, thereby exposing them to danger associated with travelling at night.
Matabeleland North provincial medical director Munekayi Padingani said there was a need for coordination by Health and Primary and Secondary Education ministries.
"We target a certain number of schools per day. Our aim is to vaccinate everyone present on the day even if our staff has to work extra hours," said Padingani.
