A 34-year-old woman has been arrested after she assaulted a policer officer who wanted to arrest her for not wearing a face mask.

The incident happened on Wednesday shortly after 9am at corner Joshua Mqabuko Street and 5 Avenue.

Constable Roseline Macheza, who is stationed at Bulawayo Central Police Station, spotted Lilian Shumba (34) not wearing a face mask.

"Macheza was in a police uniform, she introduced herself to Shumba and told her that she was under arrest for not wearing a face mask. Shumba fumed saying she cannot be arrested," said a source close to the case.

Macheza tried to handcuff Shumba, but Shumba other ideas as she grabbed Macheza by her throat and rained fast blows on her.

Macheza fell down, but Shumba did not stop as she continued hitting her and bit her on her back.

Two police officers came to the rescue of Macheza, they handcuffed Shumba and took her to Bulawayo Central Police Station.

Efforts to get a comment from Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube were fruitless as his mobile number went straight to voicemail.
