Zacc, Zinara team up on graft

THE Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) has teamed up with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) to set up a committee to curb graft at the road authority.
Zinara chief executive officer Nkosinathi Ncube said: "Working under the guidance of Zacc, we have set up an integrity committee to focus on ensuring that proper processes and procedures are established to eradicate corruption."
In 2018, a Grant Thornton audit report unearthed shocking corruption at Zinara, which, for instance, paid US$500 000 to a non-existent company between 2012 and 2013. Zinara also paid more than US$10 million to bogus firms linked to politicians and government officials for dubious contracts.
"It is a reality that the legacy issues of corruption at Zinara will be with the institution for some time. However, it is important to note that the restructuring of Zinara, focusing on its core mandate means that Zinara now only interfaces with the 92 road authorities across the country and does not directly interact with road contractors,"Ncube said.
He also said to improve smooth collection of funds, Zinara had put in place full-fledged information communication technology, risk and loss control departments and CCTV to detect fraudulent activities.
