Rehabilitation of the stretch of road from Samuel Parirenyatwa to Cement side along the Bulawayo-Harare road will be complete by end of May this year, the Bulawayo City Council has said.
In a notice published in the press Sunday, Bulawayo town clerk Middleton Nyoni said progress on the project had been stalled by excessive rains in the city.
"Work on the construction of Harare road commenced on Wednesday the August 14 2013. Progress has been slowed down by the wet spell the city has experienced since November 2013," said Nyoni.
The city council noted that Group Five, which was engaged to carry out the project, was expected to begin working on the remaining strip between Samuel Parirenyatwa and Portland Cement on April 2 2014.
"As part of the rehabilitation, the section between Josiah Tongogara and Cecil Avenue will be effectively closed from the April 2 to May 30 2014 for city inbound traffic, effectively converting the section into a one way road," noted the town clerk.
The rehabilitation of the Harare-Bulawayo road is part of the $206 million project being bankrolled by the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).
Government signed the $206,6m agreement with the DBSA for the 820 kilometre road upgrade in 2011.
The road rehabilitation project comes along with the construction of new tolling points to replace the existing temporary structures.
The first toll plaza, situated at Ntabazinduna, 20 kilometers out of Bulawayo, was commissioned by former Transport minister Nicholas Goche in April last year.
