FORMER Highlanders striker, Makreza Navaya, allowed alcohol to get the better of him and assaulted his ex-girlfriend for refusing to share a bed with him.

The retired footballer was sentenced to perform 175 hours of community service at Regina Mundi High School by Gweru magistrate, Judith Taruvinga.

Navaya, 32, who repairs watches in the Gweru City Centre and resides at House Number 4 Section 5 in Mtapa, appeared before Taruvinga yesterday facing a charge of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Constance Dube, 22, of Ascot Infill.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Taruvinga gave Navaya a wholly suspended eight months imprisonment sentence on condition that the former soccer player performs 175 hours of community service at Regina Mundi High School.

A remorseful Navaya could not come up with a convincing response when asked why he attacked his former lover.

He could only stammer: "Your worship, I was drunk at the time and I deeply regret what I did."

Agreed facts are that on March 23 this year at around 2AM, Navaya approached Dube's residence and demanded a place to sleep overnight.

The court heard that Dube refused on the basis that they had both moved on.

Dube then called Navaya's girlfriend notifying her of her boyfriend's actions resulting in Navaya's outrage.

The court heard that Navaya stood up and snatched Dube's cellphone, slapped her on the cheek and then bit her once on her left arm.

The complainant's roommates tried to restrain the former footballer from inflicting further pain on Dube but their efforts were in vain.

Upon realising their limitations, they quickly rushed to Mtapa Police Station for help.

Police at Mtapa attended the scene leading to Navaya's arrest.

Daniel Tafuma appeared for the State.
