A 70-YEAR-OLD man from Bulawayo's Pumula South suburb yesterday said he collapsed after discovering that his nephew had broken into his bedroom before disappearing with $2,000.
Mazwine Gumbo, who lives with his nephew Hope Gumbo, 23, told the court he collapsed after the discovery.
"I made sure I locked my bedroom door when I departed for Mpopoma at midday. I left Hope alone in the house but upon my return I noticed that he had broken into the room and taken $2,000 from my wardrobe. I tried calling him on his phone but it kept ringing unanswered. I was so shocked that I collapsed," said Gumbo.
He said as a result he only reported the matter to the police on the following day after composing himself. Hope pleaded guilty to the theft charge leveled against him, saying he stole the money to settle a debt.
Prosecuting, Whatmore Tembo told the court that Hope used a sharp object to break into the room.
"On July 13 at about 12PM Mazwine Gumbo locked his bedroom door. He left Hope Gumbo in the house and advised him to make sure the room was secure. Upon his arrival at 6PM he noticed that the room had been broken into and $2,000 had been taken from his wardrobe," said Tembo.
Magistrate Temba Chimiso lambasted Hope for betraying his uncle's trust.
"You have no regard for other people. How can you steal $2,000 from your uncle? You betrayed the trust he bestowed upon you, $2,000 is a lot of money. Did you think that it was manna from heaven?" asked Chimiso.
Hope was remanded in custody and will be sentenced today.
