A FAMILY in Bulawayo's Iminyela suburb grappled with emotions yesterday as they buried their nine-month-old baby boy who was electrocuted after touching a live electric cable on Friday last week.

Miguel Murindagomo was left by his mother in the custody of his grandmother, Ellen Nkomo, who was asleep when the baby came into contact with the electric cable.

The Chronicle visited the bereaved family at their home and Miguel's uncle, Bigboy Dube, 54, narrated the events leading to his nephew's death. "While I was coming home, I heard my mother, maNkomo and maMo (mother of Miguel) crying saying that Miguel has been electrocuted. My mother Ellen had fallen asleep on the couch together with the baby. The baby crawled and touched an electric code of a television," said Dube.

"Miguel's body had become weak and he died on the way to Pelandaba Clinic. Miguel's mother, Sharon Moyo, had visited her friend when the incident occurred."

Dube said they had not realised that the electric cable was exposed until the incident.

"I feel pained and shocked by this incident. We never noticed that a television electric code was lying naked (uncovered) until this incident. We're still trying to come to terms with it," he said.

Miguel's father, Vincent Murindagomo, said he was shocked by his son's sudden death.

"When I was called at around 2PM, I was told that my son was in critical condition after being burnt by a TV electric code. When I went to Pelandaba Clinic, I discovered that my son was already dead," said Murindagomo.

Bulawayo Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed receiving the report.

He advised members of public to be careful and responsible with electric cables.

"I can confirm that we received a report that a nine-month-old baby was electrocuted. We urge members of the public to be very careful when dealing with electric codes. Dangerous connection of Zesa cables is a chargeable offence which may attract a jail term. You may be charged with culpable homicide or negligence," said Insp Moyo.
