BCC one of the pilot projects for development of community tourism

Bulawayo City Council senior Public Relations officer Nesisa Mpofu has said the local authority is  one of the four pilot projects for the development of community tourism in Zimbabwe.

She said the pilot areas are Bulawayo, Chesvingo Cultural village in Great Zimbabwe, Tengenenge Arts and Craft Centre in Guruve and Gairezi Ecotourism Project in Nyanga.

"The four pilot projects are being capacitated with skills on tourism and hospitality, marketing and familiarisation tours by media and tour operators. JICA a japanese development agency and RETOSA...Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa will use the Community Based Tourism Manual in other projects in the SADC region," Mpofu said through her Facebook post.

"In Bulawayo the sites include...City Hall, Cenotaph next to Main Post Office, Hanging Tree, Inxwala site, Mzilikazi Home Industry and Art and Craft Centre, Makokoba Herbal Market.. EMkambo..Ko Sgqo Ngekhaya..a township lodge in Emganwini etc."

She said they last week went around the city with JICA representatives and representatives from government ministries and other stakeholders to brief communities in the project sites.

"The project will produce a brochure on various community tourism sites, train Tour guides and communities in the various project areas," she said. "Thanks to JI C A.. African Development Bank...Government Ministries and Amakhosi for this initiative."
